Poco expanded its X-series smartphone range in India with the launch of Poco X4 Pro 5G. The smartphone succeeds the Poco X3 smartphone that was launched in the country last year. The new device is powered by a Qualcomm processor and runs Android 11 operating system out of the box. The company claims that the smartphone is loaded with features that give superior overall performance. Poco X4 Pro 5G comes in three RAM and storage variants -- 6GB+64GB, 6GB+128GB and 8GB+128GB priced at Rs 18,999, Rs 19,999 and Rs 21,999 respectively. We got the chance to review the 8GB RAM + 128GB variant, read further to know what we think of it.

Design and display

When you first unbox the package, apart from the smartphone, you get a 67W power brick, USB-C charging cable, SIM ejector tool, and a quick start guide. You also get a silicon protective case so you don’t have to spend extra bucks on the case.

Poco X4 Pro 5G comes with a shimmer design that gives it a ritzy new look. The phone is offered in three colour options -- Laser Black, Laser Blue and Poco Yellow. We received the Laser Black colour variant for the review. Although the handset features a glossy finish with reflective design it does not attract much fingerprints. The rear of the devices also sports a large rectangular camera module with triple lens setup. The camera bump is significantly large

At the front, the space is occupied by a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 1080x2400 pixel resolution, thin bezels and punchhole selfie camera. The display gets a 120Hz refresh rate and it offers a smooth viewing experience. The phone also offers the option to pick 60Hz standard refresh rate to save battery. The device gets a peak brightness of 1200 nits that makes it easy to use outdoors even under harsh sunlight. The display is vibrant and generates rich colours. Watching videos or playing games on the device is a great experience, thanks to good viewing angles.

The right side of the smartphone has a power button mounted with a fingerprint reader. The positioning of the button makes it easier to access even if you are using the phone with one hand. The volume control buttons are placed right above the power button. The left side of the smartphone gets a clean look without any button or slot.

At the bottom, the smartphone gets a USB-C port, speaker grille, microphone and a dual-card slot. The tray can host one microSD card and one nano SIM card. A microphone and speaker grille is also placed on the top side along with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The handset weighs 205 grams and does feel a bit heavy to hold, especially during long hour usage. And little doubt that the body feels durable.

Performance

Poco X4 Pro 5G is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset with Qualcomm Adreno 619 GPU. The handset offers up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage. Internal storage can be expanded up to 1TB by adding a microSD card. The device offers smooth and hassle-free day-to-day performance. You will hardly face any lag or issue while using face recognition to unlock the device.

Gaming on the smartphone is great. Whether it’s light games like Subway Surfer or heavy ones like Call of Duty Mobile or Asphalt 9, the device gives no stutter or setback of any kind. The smartphone offers 360Hz touch sampling rate that reduces touch latency and responds to every action with sensitivity and precision, adding to the overall gaming experience. The huge camera module on the Poco X4 Pro 5G can be a bit of a setback when it comes to the gaming grip and the snag can be felt while playing high intensity games.

According to the company, the Poco X4 Pro 5G features a large LiquidCool copper pipe and multiple layers of graphite sheets for rapid heat dissipation and sustained cooling. We did not face any heating issues on the smartphone while gaming or streaming a movie online.

Talking about the software, the Poco X4 Pro 5G runs Android 11 operating system topped with the company's own layer of MIUI 13. The OS is neat and quite customisable but you do have to get rid of the bloatware. The smartphone runs smoothly while multitasking and we barely noticed any lag in performing day-to-day functions.

The Poco X4 Pro 5G comes with a triple camera setup at the back. The rear camera system comprises a 64MP main sensor with f/1.79 aperture, 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and 2MP macro camera with f/2.4 aperture. The images that we clicked turned out to be pretty decent. The AI feature improves overall image output. The camera works fine under bright daylight. However, the smartphone is just at par when it comes to low-light photography.

It gets a dedicated night mode for low-light conditions that can help you to capture maximum light available for an image. Images clicked post evening were noisy and lacked details. The macro lens, on the other hand, was quite acceptable.

The camera app on the devices has an easy UI with scores of adjustment options. There are quick toggles for HDR, AI, flash, filters and others at the top. You can switch between shooting modes- Portrait, Pro, Video and others with a simple swipe.

We also tried our hand on the portrait mode in the camera. The mode wasn’t able to distinguish foreground and background properly. It was not able to define the edges well.

At the front, the smartphone has a 16MP selfie shooter with an f/2.4 aperture. Selfies are bright and detailed. The images turn out acceptable for social media platforms.

Battery

Poco X4 Pro 5G houses a 5000mAh battery. It comes with a 67W charging adapter which is quite massive. The device takes about 35 minutes to fully charge. Once fully charged, the smartphone can easily last around two days with mixed usage that includes light gaming, browsing through social media apps and streaming movies online. The Ultra battery saver mode on the device does come handy and almost doubles the battery life.

Verdict

Poco X4 Pro 5G at Rs 21,999 (8GB+128GB) offers decent performance, good display and battery life. All these features make the Poco X4 5G a preferred choice for someone looking for a budget-friendly all rounder smartphone. The device’s camera offers satisfactory results overall. The low-light camera output needs a special mention as it is quite impressive. The handset could have done better in terms of design, especially the camera bump. To wrap it up, Poco X4 Pro 5G with Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 octa-core chipset is a smartphone that ticks the right boxes in this price segment.
